Aktiv eller passiv form – Hvad er bedst? 

Den passive stil er den traditionelle, objektive stil i videnskabelige artikler – den form “man” plejer at bruge. Men sproget udvikler sig løbende, og selv om passiv stadig bruges mest, vinder den aktive form terræn – særligt i amerikansk videnskabelig litteratur.

I aktiv form udfører sætningens grundled ‘aktivt’ handlingen (fx The doctor treats the patient). Fokus er altså på grundleddet (her The doctor) og ikke genstandsleddet (her the patient). I passiv form er fokus på genstandsleddet (fx The patient is treated by the doctor).

Om du bruger aktiv eller passiv i sætningen afhænger helt enkelt af, hvad du ønsker, der skal være sætningens fokus. Du kan ændre en aktiv sætning til en passiv sætning ved at 1) bytte rundt på grundled og genstandsled; 2) ændre den aktive sætnings udsagnsled til en form af to be + kort tillægsform (treats /is treated); 3) og evt. hægte den aktive sætnings grundled på sætningen med forholdsordet by.

Undertiden er grundleddet ikke til stede i den passive form. Her er en aktiv form: We tested independently derived cultures for resistance to X. Grundleddet (we) kan helt forsvinde. Se den passive form: lndependently derived cultures were tested for resistance to X.  Hvis den, der udfører handlingen, skal med, indsættes by us, og så lyder sætningen: lndependently derived cultures were tested for resistance to X by us.

Hvad skal du gøre?

Det er et stilistisk og et strategisk valg om du vil skrive i aktiv eller passiv form! Brug aktiv, når det er vigtigt at vise, hvem der gør hvad.

Brug passiv: 1) Hvis aktøren, der udfører handlingen, er ukendt, irrelevant eller indlysende (fx The first edition of Freud’s earliest writings was published in 1899). 2) Hvis handlingen er vigtigere end aktøren (fx The solution was heated to 60 degrees C for approximately 10 min and then allowed to cool). 3) Hvis genstandsleddet er sætningens vigtigste led (fx Carbohydrates are produced by green plants through a process of photosynthesis). 4) Og selvfølgelig, hvis du vil undgå at stå direkte til ansvar for et eller andet (fx The experiment could not be performed for various reasons) eller ikke bebrejde andre (fx This may not have been completely understood).
